Invisalign® Q & A

What happens during Invisalign® treatment?

Invisalign® orthodontic treatment starts with an evaluation, including digital x-rays to evaluate the alignment issues and impressions or molds of the teeth. These molds are sent to a special lab that makes the Invisalign® aligners. The molds are scanned into a computer that uses special software to create a series of virtual 3D models of the teeth, showing how the teeth need to move to become straight and properly aligned. Next, the computer uses those images to create the actual aligners. Each series of aligners is custom-made for the patient, and most patients have from 18 to 30 sets of aligners. During treatment, the patient wears each aligner for about two weeks, then “swaps” it for the next aligner in the series. Over time, the aligners shift the teeth into their proper positions. Office visits take place about every six weeks. Most patients complete their treatment in two years or less.

How does Invisalign® compare to braces that use wires and brackets?

Most patients prefer Invisalign® because the smooth, clear design makes them almost invisible while they’re in place, and there are no sharp wires or brackets to cause sore spots or irritation. Plus, they’re removable, making it easier for patients to brush and floss their teeth and also eliminating any dietary restrictions so patients can eat all the foods they love. And finally, because they’re custom-made for each patient, treatment with Invisalign® aligners usually takes less time compared to traditional-style braces.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign® orthodontics?

Invisalign® offers different models and designs suitable for correcting many alignment issues, but there are some patients for whom Invisalign® may not be the ideal choice. During the initial evaluation, we can determine if Invisalign® is the best option or if another approach might be better.
