Cosmetic Dentistry Q & A

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry includes all the treatments and procedures designed to correct cosmetic defects and enhance the appearance of the teeth and smiles. Many different procedures can be used in cosmetic treatments, including:

  • teeth whitening
  • tooth-colored fillings
  • veneers
  • crowns
  • bridges, dentures, and implants
  • inlays and onlays for very large cavities
  • cosmetic bonding
  • Invisalign® orthodontics

What is a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is a comprehensive treatment plan designed to address multiple issues that detract from the way a person’s teeth or smile appear. Like all cosmetic dentistry treatment, smile makeovers begin with digital x-rays to evaluate the health of the teeth and to aid in determining which procedures may be the best options for achieving the patient’s goals.

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin coverings placed on the visible surface of teeth to correct the appearance of cosmetic defects like:

  • deep discoloration that can’t be corrected with teeth whitening procedures
  • gaps or spaces between teeth
  • crooked teeth
  • teeth that appear too small in comparison to other teeth or to the smile as a whole
  • “gummy” smiles
  • teeth with uneven or very worn surfaces
  • tiny cracks or chips

How are veneers applied?

Veneers usually require two office visits. During the first visit, a very small amount of the tooth surface material is removed to make room for the veneer so it doesn’t extend above or over the edges of neighboring teeth. An impression is made and sent to the lab where the veneer will be custom made using state-of-the-art technology and materials, and a temporary bonding restoration will be placed on the tooth to protect it. At the second visit, the tooth surface is carefully cleaned and the veneer is applied using a strong dental adhesive, then gently buffed so it feels comfortable and blends beautifully.

Are cosmetic treatments covered by dental insurance?

Most dental insurance plans do not cover the cost of treatments like teeth whitening that are purely cosmetic. Our staff can review insurance plans to determine the amount of coverage as well as help patients identify financing plans that can help make the cost of care affordable.
